Chicago Flood Crisis Management

Owner: Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT)
Client: Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT)

Responsible for protecting the CBOT trading operations from flooding from Chicago freight tunnel system. Oversaw and directed the efforts of two teams of commercial construction divers and a general contractor to isolate this multiple sub-basement structure from the Chicago Flood. Inflow of water was estimated at 200,000 gallons per hour — a 12” diameter high head pump was used to stabilize water level while divers installed multiple devices engineered on-site to cap the tunnel pipes using a process similar to capping an oil well. Within 72 hours 95% of all water inflow was controlled and a manometer standpipe system installed to monitor driving head pressure in the tunnel system for the Army Corps of Engineers.
